Consolidation: what the platform deals mean for standalone catalogs

Short answer

Snowflake agreed to buy Select Star, ServiceNow agreed to buy data.world, and platform venture arms are investing in context vendors. Here is what that changes for teams choosing a catalog for agents.

The catalog market is consolidating in two directions. Data platforms are absorbing catalog technology, and enterprise software platforms are buying catalogs to feed their own AI products. Both matter if you are choosing a layer for AI agents now.

Which deals happened?

Snowflake announced an agreement to acquire Select Star's team and platform technology on 24 November 2025, to expand Horizon Catalog. Select Star's site now states that it is part of Snowflake. ServiceNow announced an agreement to acquire data.world on 7 May 2025, and data.world is now sold as ServiceNow Data Catalog, available with the ServiceNow AI Platform.

Platform venture arms are also active. Jedify names Snowflake Ventures among the investors in its June 2026 Series A. Collibra's homepage carries the news that it was named Databricks' Governance Partner of the Year.

What changes for Select Star customers?

Select Star still documents automated documentation, cross-platform column-level lineage, semantic model generation for Snowflake Cortex Analyst and an MCP server. What its pages do not state is the plan for customers outside Snowflake. If you run several warehouses, ask directly, in writing, before you commit. In our ranking, the uncertainty shows up in the deployment criterion, not as a penalty on its lineage or automation.

What changes for data.world customers?

The product now sits inside the ServiceNow AI Platform. ServiceNow describes centralized metadata, governance workflows, a knowledge graph and a semantic layer that adds business meaning for AI agents, with integrations to Snowflake, Databricks, AWS, BigQuery, Oracle and 100+ platforms through what it calls zero-copy architecture. If ServiceNow is already your workflow platform, that is convenient. If it is not, the catalog decision has become a platform decision. We did not score data.world because the pages we could read did not cover agent delivery, lineage or time to value.

Does consolidation favor platform-native catalogs?

For teams whose data, definitions and agents live in one platform, yes: Horizon Context and Unity Catalog Semantics are getting stronger, and they come with the platform you already pay for. We describe both on the platform-native page and do not score them, because they are a different purchase.

For teams whose agent questions cross platforms, consolidation cuts the other way. A catalog owned by one data platform has less reason to map another platform's assets in depth. The case for a standalone layer is that it can map every warehouse, transformation tool and BI tool on equal terms. Test that case against your own stack diagram rather than taking it from any vendor.

What should you check in contracts?

Three clauses deserve attention now. Change of control: what happens to your contract and roadmap commitments if the vendor is acquired. Data export: whether you can export your metadata, definitions and rules in a usable form. Integration commitments: which connectors the vendor commits to maintain, especially for platforms that compete with an acquirer.

What does consolidation mean for pricing?

Folding a catalog into a platform usually changes how it is sold. data.world is now available with the ServiceNow AI Platform rather than as a separate subscription, and Select Star's pricing page now redirects to its homepage. Platform-native features tend to be billed through the platform's own consumption model. That can make the first year cheaper and the cost harder to see. When you compare a platform-native option with a standalone tool, ask the platform vendor for the compute or credit consumption the catalog and semantic features will add, not only the license line.

How does this affect our ranking?

Not directly. Scores follow published facts, not predictions. But the deployment criterion records whether plans outside an acquirer are stated, and every review notes ownership changes. We will update the affected pages when vendors publish their plans.

If you are mid-evaluation with either acquired product, keep a second option in the shortlist until the acquirer's plans for customers outside its platform are in writing. The cost of a parallel proof of concept is small next to the cost of rebuilding context in a new tool a year later.
